Bilingual Programme

Where East and West work in perfect harmony

As China rises as a global economic power, Mandarin is fast becoming the language for many young people to master. As studies show that children acquire languages naturally up to the age of eight, EtonHouse Broadrick recognised the potential of introducing a Chinese-English primary-level bilingual programme.

In 2011, we became one the first international school in Singapore to offer this study option, aligned with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years programme. Our track record speaks for itself – a two-time champion in the Singapore Chinese Language Competition for International Schools organised by HSK Centre (Crestar) and five cohorts of fluent bilingual speakers.

Our Chinese and English language teachers collaborate to deliver the Units Of Inquiry within the PYP framework. Students are assessed for their language proficiency through the Youth Chinese Test (YCT). The YCT is an international standardized Chinese language test which is directed at examining non-native primary and secondary school students’ ability to apply Chinese language in their studies and daily lives.

Watch your child grow in confidence under the EtonHouse Bilingual Programme, for Pre-School & Primary Years.

Double the language, more than double the fun

Bilingual Immersion Programme

For Year 1
The new Year 1 Bilingual Immersion Programme will immerse the children fully in the language by extending the Mandarin teaching, and by ensuring that the language is used naturally by the children at work and at play.

An experienced and creative Bilingual Mandarin ‘Homeroom’ teacher will be leading the class. A lively and stimulating learning environment will ensure that the children have fun while learning a new language in a natural way. Our experienced Preschool leader will also be delivering daily focused English language lessons in class. The children will continue to experience and to enjoy an array of specialists lessons through the medium of English. Sixteen hours of Mandarin, and over nine hours of English per week.

In Year 2 to Year 6, we’re increasing the dedicated Mandarin teaching time from under 4 hours to 71⁄2 hours per week in our Bilingual Programme classes. We’re also extending the Bilingual Mandarin programme to the final Primary Year, Year 6. Our talented and experienced Mandarin teachers will ensure that the children build and practice targeted vocabulary through natural conversations and the completion of planned tasks.

Our aim is for children to have more opportunities to use both languages every day and to speak the language naturally with ease while working and playing with their friends. Our goal is to ensure that the pupils in our Bilingual Programme are fluent Mandarin speakers by the time they leave us at the end of Year 6, to ensure that they have strong dual language skills and become truly bilingual.

To develop and hone their reading and writing skills, your child also attends two daily 45-minute sessions – one for English and one for Mandarin – that focus on and reinforce the essentials of each language, particularly in grammar and sentence construction.

Our small class sizes are the perfect setting for peer learning and one-to-one interactions between children and teachers. Your child will hone their speaking skills through song, poetry, presentations, conversations and reading aloud. They’ll soon be able to spontaneously engage those around them in both English and Mandarin.

Immerse your child in a whole new world

At EtonHouse, we take bilingualism to the next level. Through our various bilingual and bicultural initiatives, your child will explore the Chinese culture through field trips and participate in engaging extracurricular activities where opportunities to speak Mandarin abound. From board games and reading programmes to concerts and public speaking at assemblies, each activity is designed to instil confidence and set your child up for success in the next phase of their fun-filled learning journey.

Your partner in learning – in school and beyond

We go the extra mile for greater continuity in learning by partnering with and supporting parents, something you won’t find in other schools. Our teachers provide regular updates on what’s being taught in school to reinforce the same concepts and vocabulary at home.

Give your child the gift of language that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Come visit us and learn more about our Bilingual Programme.
